Mobile broadband is set for big growth in the US this year according to broadband comparison site www.broadbandexpert.com. The prediction is based on the US following the massive growth in mobile broadband in the UK and Europe witnessed last year. However Rob Webber, Commercial director of Broadband Expert, believes that there are few key factors that will fuel the growth in this technology. Firstly Webber believes that prices are likely to fall which will open up the technology to many more consumers (mobile broadband has been predominantly used by businesses so far). US mobile broadband prices are 2-3 times the price of equivalent services in Europe; however European prices where similarly expensive in 2008 and it was only after significant price cuts that the technology really took off.

The second factor which is likely to lead to growth in mobile broadband is the adoption of 4G which is already being rolled out by companies such as Sprint. 4G will offer speeds which are comparable or even faster than the current high speed internet services many of us use at present. This will allow mobile broadband to become a true competitor to fixed high speed internet services. The current 3G technology behind most mobile broadband connections is much slower than a typical high speed internet connection and for many will not be a suitable replacement; however 4G is set to change this. With more and more us seeing internet access as an essential part of our every day lives the race for domination between mobile broadband and fixed high speed internet services looks set to be an interesting one to watch.
