If you plug your iPhone into iTunes today, you should know there is a new iOS update available for upgrade.

Yes, the iOS 4.1 is here. The latest version of iOS is not a huge update but it comes with lots of bug fixes and several new features. Particularly, for iPhone 3G users, Apple claims that this version resolves the performance issue and makes iPhone 3G run much faster on iOS 4.

According to Apple’s release note, the iOS 4.1 comes with these updates:

  • Game Center – It lets you invite friends to multi-player games over the Internet, play mult-player games by auto-matching with other players, as well as, view leaderboards and achievement. You can even discover new games from friends.
  • High dynamic range (HDR) photos – This feature is just for iPhone 4. If you do not heard of HDR photos, check out Wikipedia for details. For those using iPhone 3G or 3GS, even though HDR is not built into the iOS, you can always download HDR app such as TrueHDR from App Store.
  • Support for TV show rentals on iTunes
  • Ability to upload HD videos to YouTube and MobileMe over WiFi – Again, this feature is for iPhone 4 only
  • Support for AVRCP-supported accessories – Full Bluetooth AVRCP (i.e. Audio/Video Remote Control) support including next & previous track control
  • FaceTime calling directly from Favorites
  • Bug fixes including iPhone 4 proximity sensor performance, Nike+ iPod fixes and Bluetooth improvements
  • iPhone 3G performance fix – now iPhone 3G should run faster on iOS 4. For more about the performance improvement, you can check out the earlier post.

The iOS 4.1 is now available to download via iTunes. If you are using a normal iPhone, go ahead and upgrade it.

Warning for iPhone Jailbreaker

For those using jailbroken iPhone, as usual, please stay away from the upgrade. Presently, there is no jailbreak solution for iOS 4.1. More importantly, the latest version of iOS also includes the baseband update. That means it will lose both jailbreak and unlock if you upgrade to iOS 4.1.

The infamous iPhone Dev team has posted a detailed note warning all iPhone jailbreakers not to upgrade to iOS 4.1. So don’t hit the upgrade button and say “No!” when iTunes prompts you for the upgrade.

I know the team is already working on a new solution for jailbreaking and unlocking iOS 4.1. For now, just be patient and wait for the release. Anyhow, iOS 4.1 is not a huge update. The iOS 4.0.1 should be good enough for most users.

Stay tuned. I will keep you update with the iOS and jailbreaking. If you have upgraded to iOS 4.1, let us know how it goes by leaving comment below.
