The HTC Desire is undeniably one of, if not the most successful Smartphone to ever come out of the Taiwanese manufacturer’s kitchen. It has been dubbed by many as one of the best Smartphones of the year alongside the likes of the Apple iPhone 4 or the BlackBerry Bold. And now, they’ve followed up the highly acclaimed device with the HTC Desire HD. Let’s see what this Smartphone has to offer.

A Legacy

The HTC Desire HD has quite a legacy to live up to. As mentioned earlier, the original Desire was a highly successful device and the Desire HD hopes to build on this success. This also means that it has some big shoes to fill as consumer will be expecting a lot from a device that bears the same name as the legendary HTC Desire.

Fortunately, the HTC Desire HD is able to live up to these high expectations. It possesses all the cutting edge features one would expect from a Smartphone of this calibre. This includes 3G HSDPA compatibility, EDGE & GPRS connectivity, and of course, Wi-Fi.

The device even comes with an amazing 8-Megapixel camera that captures excellent quality photos. As expected, this Smartphone still sports the famed Google Android mobile OS and its version 2.2 or Froyo that’s equipped on this Smartphone. To back up the operating system is an equally powerful 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor under the hood.

High Definition

As its name implies, the HTC Desire HD’s claim to fame is its ability to deliver high definition image outputs. The venue of this feature is the mobile’s gigantic 4.3” screen which shrinks even the biggest of screens in the Smartphone scene today.
The resolution is at an astonishing 480 x 800 pixels and it can display up to 16 million colours. The display also features an AMOLED capacitive touch screen which guarantees flawless touch responsiveness.

1)Have you developed Apps for any other platforms before? If Yes What are they?
Yes, I started with phone development for Windows Mobile 6.0 when I got my HTC Touch Pro.
I wanted an application which could measure and give me  feedback while I'm running, so I built
"Marathon"(http://www.marathon-mobile.net/). The application utilizes the phones GPS-receiver
to keep track of your  result and announces the progress in the speaker or headset.

2)Why did you choose WP7 as a platform of your choice?
I've worked with the .NET platform in collage and as an IT consultant. So I already know the
framework and  I'm happy with it abilities. Since I'm porting my  application Marathon from
Windows Mobile 6.x I can also  re-use almost everything (except for the UI of course).
I also believe the platform will be a success and I want my application to be there from the
 beginning.

3)Which one do you think as the single most feature you liked in WP7?
The ability to run Silverlight, a technology which is already out there, known by many people and
makes it quite easy to create visually appealing applications. I believe the success of today's phone
platforms largely depends on the supply of 3d party applications.

4)Are you satisfied with WP7 Platform development tools?
Every time someone knocks on my door I hope It's some delivery guy who got the developer phone
Microsoft kindly letting me borrow.Unfortunately I'm still waiting and yet I'm able to develop
most of the application I'm working on. Not that a device emulator is something new or unique
to the Windows Phone platform, but It's still a very good asset. Microsoft have done a good job
in providing great developer tools for anyone who's interested in phone development. The platform
is still in an early stage and I'm sure it would be even easier to create applications in a year or
so when a few more Silverlight controls are available.

5)What are the Apps you are developing now in WP7?
I'm porting my application Marathon from Windows Mobile 6.x. As I've already mentioned the
application keeps track of your movement with the help of a GPS-receiver. My goal is to make
it the perfect companion for sporting activates such as running and bicycling. You can configure
it to announce various statistics in the headset or speaker while you're recording. This gives you
the advantage of always knowing your performance and is a great morale boost to reach your
goals. You can compete with yourself by setting the goal to a previous result, or a generic one
if you haven't recorded anything for the path your about to take. The application records and displays
data such as time, distance, speed and your altitude change. You can also share your results on
 Facebook and Twitter.
6)In what way Microsoft can improve their WP7 or What does WP7 lacks from?
The platform is still in an early stage, and I'm sure it'll evolve a lot in the not too distant future.
Unfortunately I haven't used or even touched a WP7 device,
so it's quite hard to point out what I think is missing.
One thing which have been bugging me on the emulator is the lack of arrow keys in
combination with the fact that taping in a word selects the entire word.
So as far as I know there's no way to correct the spelling in the beginning of a word
without re-typing the entire word. It's a minor glitch,
but still something that bugs me.

7)Future Plans of you?
I'll continue to develop, improve and add features to Marathon. If I figure out a great idea
and find the time to start another project I might do so, but considering  I'm doing this on my
spare time it's hard to keep up with multiple projects at the same time.

1)Have you developed Apps for any other platforms before? If Yes What are they?

Only desktop applications.

2)Why did you choose WP7 as a platform of your choice?

Because it uses the same technology I use in my full time job – .NET Framework.

You don’t need to learn something completely new, like for iPhone. You just use the same tools and language you already know.

3)Which one do you think as the single most feature you liked in WP7?

I would say Silverlight. It is similar to what I use daily – WPF.

4)Are you satisfied with WP7 Platform development tools?

It is too early to say. WP7 Platform is still in Beta. Some things are not there. Like Pivot and Panorama controls. Documentation is also not 100% complete. I would wait till RTM to answer this question.

5)What are the Apps you are developing now in WP7?

I’m currently developing Battleships game

6)In what way Microsoft can improve their WP7 or What does WP7 lacks from?

Currently I’m missing the unique identification of phone or user for highscore list.

7)Future Plans of you?

First of all I want to see the real hardware and test my App on it. Then I will decide if I work further with WP7.

Thanks Daniel. All the best for your future works.

For business users especially, Windows Mobile still does a lot of things Windows Phone 7 can not, so it is not really such a surprise when Samsung announced the release of the enterprise-focussed Samsung Omnia 4 in Germany yesterday.

The Windows Mobile 6.5.3 based handset features a front-facing QWERTY keyboard and touch screen, and according to Samsung, due to the inclusion of social networking applications, combines work and play ideally.

The handset is available now, and will sell unlocked for ?299.

wp7-xbox-live[1]

Because of all the news covering all the new developers and apps, we have forgot about the old classic Windows Mobile developers. A_C is one of those developer that has worked for years to improve your users experience with all his great apps. Now I asked him to share a bit of what he thinks about Windows Phone 7, and if S2 will be there for launch day.

Hi,
Hope it’s not too late for the reply.
It’s a bad & good feeling when I know WP7 no longer support old applications.  Since I’ve been an active unmanaged code programmer for the last three years in the WM, I never coded anything in managed code.  Of course, it won’t be that difficult to write managed code as there are more & more resources in the net.

However, the main reason that S2 apps will not appear on WP7 is simply because a "need" is not there.  If you guys remember well, I coded S2U2 mainly because there was (and is) a "need" that the default WM5/6 lock screen is really a crap.  When S2U2 further developed to include CallerID function, I need an application to assign larger pic to a contact.  This "need" arises S2V.  Later on I received a lot requests to have a finger-friendly music player, and it comes to S2P.

You can see that there is always a "need" in all my S2 applications.  Since WP7 will have most similar features as S2 apps already built-in the OS, I think I can take a rest this time.  And it’s good to see that MS is finally trying to fill the "needs" of WM users.  Being said that, who knows the future?  Let’s stay tuned & enjoy what you currently have.  :)
Cheers,
A_C

So as you can see he will not be there because and only because he feels he is not needed at the moment. I guess that means he can take a brake while his current Windows Mobile apps takeover Marketplace.

Comment below and tell us what you think of this, and are there any other developers you would like to hear from.. Tell me in the comment.

 at&tlineupwp7

According to the BGR the Windows Phone 7 launch in USA will consist of 3 devices, one each from HTC, LG and Samsung.

We have understand from previous reports the launch will centre around AT&T, being the “Premier Carrier”, and with the handsets revealed at launch today we currently have a reasonable picture of what the November launch will look like.

The first handset is the HTC Schubert, HTC’s Windows phone 7 smartphone with an aluminium unibody, iPhone 3GS-type looks and a camera which is rumoured to have a Xenon flash.

The next handset is the LG C900, which features a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

The last handset is the Samsung Cetus SGH i917, which features a 5 megapixel camera and also VGA front-facing camera.

Of course, due to the magic of  Windows Phone 7 minimum specs, we know all these handsets have minimum 1 Ghz processors and 5 megapixel cameras with flash, 3.5mm headphone jacks, hard camera buttons and good GPU’s.  That leaves the choice primarily down to style and form factor.

Which of these devices do our readers prefer? Vote in our poll below.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post’s poll.

lg-c900-itw-04

Engadget is on a roll today with AT&T Windows Phone 7 leaks.  This time they have the LG C900, the second of 3 Windows Phone 7 handsets set to rock up on AT&T, the other two being the HTC Schubert and Samsung Cetus, and the only one featuring a slide-out keyboard.

I am noticing a theme with the design of these handsets, being black, soft-touch and rounded, much like Microsoft’s KIN handsets, and it seems quite likely Microsoft had a hand in the design of these devices.

See more pictures after the break.

Zune_HD_wp7

Most of us loyal Windows mobile/Zune HD fans have always dreamt of the day when Microsoft would wake up and produce with a Zune phone. We got our first taste of the Zune integration with the Kin phones but the hardware came nowhere close to matching sleek Zune HD industrial design. The next iteration of a “Zune phone” will come in the form of WP7 handsets from various manufactures and from all design leaked so far, I have yet to see any one that I like except the Dell lightning, or maybe the Asus prototype that was shown during the Mix Conference (not the “ugly” one shown recently)

So, in order to fulfill the dreams of loyal fans like me, I think Microsoft should release a limited edition set of custom Zune HD originals inspired WP7 phones for the Windows phone 7 launch. These devices would be available in select stores in all regions where the OS launches and would guarantee IMHO, buzz worthy, headline generating  “long line stories” that would definitely pique the public interest about the platform. If Microsoft  can pull this off, I would definitely be one of those “ crazed fans” camping out for days just to get one for myself, would you?

Retroburn Game Studios is a small games company making games primarily for Xbox Live, but also the desktop.  Due to the portability of XNA they are now spreading out to Microsoft’s newest platform, Windows Phone 7.

Shifter is a simple picture puzzle game we are all familiar with from our childhood.  The above video is an early demo, but of course the game does not get much more complicated than this.

Read more about their efforts and other games at their webpage here.

windowsphone7 apps

We saw the collage of applications recently released by an ex-Microsoft employee (including goodies such as a New York Times, Yelp and Youtube app), and while it is far from 200 000 applications, the collection does serve as some indication of developer sentiment to the platform, and so far it is looking pretty good.

PCWorld have interviewed some developers attending a Microsoft Bizsparks program for start-ups, and while they note most mobile developers were taking a wait and see approach, many of the attendees there had already jumped in and were talking about or demonstrating applications they were building for the new platform.

He saw big names such as uStream and Loopt, and stealth start-ups like Cellixis with its restaurant directory plans for Windows Phone 7, and observed most applications were not just re-hashes of iPhone versions, but bore the genuine look and feel of the OS, making use of features such as Live Tiles and the panoramic user interface.

PCWorld noted:

If every Windows Phone 7 developer takes this approach, the ecosystem will feel more like the coherent universe of iPhone apps than like Android, where there’s hardly any consistency from one app to another.

Harry McCracken from PCWorld concludes:

If the WinPhone programs that are available on day one live up to the promise of the ones I saw, I think there’s a good chance that people will be pleasantly surprised by the third-party software situation.

Com2uS, who recently made $250,000 on an Android app, also had a look at Windows Phone 7 and said

We went to Seattle and got to touch the prototype of [Windows Phone 7], and it looked great in terms of UI, I believe it’s going to be a big hit.

Do our readers feel, as the launch of Windows phone 7 nears, that confidence and sentiment towards the OS and its chances are rising generally? Let us know below.

Windows Phone 7 to be launched in August? We have seen a strange game of dates with Windows Phone 7, with the launch date receding on some days, and on others advancing to frankly unbelievable dates on others.

The latest rumour, via Neowin, is that Microsoft will be holding a launch event in Australia for Windows Phone 7 at the end of August.  Now I know that Australia is ahead of us in time, but probably not by a whole month earlier that the earliest date we have heard so far, the end of September 2010.

On the other hand, a launch date does not necessarily mean devices will be made available, much like the launch of  Windows Mobile 6.5 only saw devices arriving on market much later, which does lend some credence to an August date.

Will we see an official announcement by Microsoft soon? Let us know your thoughts below.

Windows Phone 7 has so far impressed most reviewers.

The Telegraph newspaper in UK has had a hands-on with Windows Phone 7, and like many have come away impressed with the OS.

Calling the OS “extremely slick, smooth and attractive”, they note it incorporates “the social networking capabilities of Android … (and) the simplicity and ease of use of the iPhone.”

An objection raised by some have been seeing their phone book overwhelmed by hundreds of facebook contacts.

Hunter Skipworth from the Telegraph however felt however that rather than feeling confusing the phone seems to develop a life of its own, as your contacts change so do the various applications and the home screen. This meant each time he look at the phone it is never quite the same.

He also praised the business potential of the OS, but felt in some ways the OS was so slick and sleek Microsoft risked giving the impression the OS was not suitable for business use.

Lastly, he felt Microsoft’s Chassis system and strict control over the amount of customization OEM’s did would prevent much of the fragmentation seen on the Android platform.

He concludes:

It shouldn’t be long now before we start seeing some of the many manufacturers associated with Windows Phone 7 showing off their handsets. From the looks of it Microsoft have built a genuine contender with Phone 7 and if the release hardware is up to scratch could have a shot at topping iPhone sales at Christmas.

wp7plusattwebt

There is something strange brewing in the air. Out of nowhere, we had a barrage of Windows Phone 7 devices rumored, or somewhat confirmed coming to AT&T. We have also heard stories over the years that the iPhone will finally break free of the AT&T stranglehold, and appear on other carriers especially Verizon. In order to counteract this loss, I think AT&T is hedging all its bets with WP7 because if you look closely, they have never really fully committed to the Android platform either like Verizon has, and furthermore, after the Kin debacle, I don’t think MS has that much faith in the Big red. All AT&T has remaining as a premier consumer Smartphone OS ends up being WP7(I think Blackberry still appeals more to the enterprise even with the 6.0 release and future of WebOS on the Palm Pre is uncertain) What do you guys think?

Developer Justin Angel, has just posted a collage of icons featuring all apps currently testing in the marketplace. The most notable one is a Youtube app located in the Music hub that now essentially removes one more obstacle towards widespread adoption of WP7. The only other interesting app is ATT UVerse, which together with all the news yesterday about all the WP7 devices coming to the carrier, cements the notion that ATT will indeed be a premier carrier for WP7.

Translating languages can be useful for business and even personal reasons like pretending you speak other languages. This translator is a very good alternative to Google translator, and is one of the only of its kind for Windows Phone. The software that we have known for not too long has received an update, and this update brings some Bing into the mix.

1) Added Bing text to speech translation
2) Bing supports Japanese and Korean translations which Google doesn’t
3) Added Icon chooser option for people who want to choose different icon for Anuvadak.

I have never used this application, but since the software seems quite popular, I thought it was worth updating you, the readers.

Microsoft has replaced Voice Command with its Tellme service on Windows Phone 7, and has recently published this video demonstrating the features.

The good news is that accessing the feature is simple, and due to the consistency from phone to phone inherent in Windows Phone 7 will mean it will be easy to find and use this feature on every handset.

On the other hand it is disappointing that the more advanced features of Voice Command, such as playing a specific piece of music or asking what your appointments for the day are were not demonstrated at all, and may even appear to be missing.  This would be particularly disappointing, considering the prominence of these features in the Microsoft Sync car products.

HTC PD26 series of Windows Phone 7 handsets

Readers who build jigsaw puzzles will know that often when you find one piece many others fall in place.  Such is the case with the HTC PC40100, confirmed to be a Windows Phone 7 device by its anaemic Bluetooth profile support (no object push for example).

A bit more research shows the handset is part of the HTC PD26 series, which features the HTC PD26100, HTC PC40100, HTC PC40200 and HTC PD67100, all featuring WIFI 802.11n capability.

As usual, we know nothing else about these handsets, but it seems there is more that enough handsets there to make sure every carrier will have at least one HTC Windows Phone 7 handset.
